TOM MACKIE

Tom Mackie has been a photographer all his working life.
His degree in commercial photography took him first to Los Angeles, where he spent five years as an industrial photographer. It was when he was travelling he found his love for landscape photography.
Moving to the UK in 1985 he pursued a full time career as a landscape photographer.
He works with digital panoramic and large format equipment.
Tom understanding of light and bold use of colour becomes a hallmark that established his reputation.
Tom now holds workshops for his work both in the UK and worldwide, he has now published a few books which are:-
LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHER SECRETS this book is revealing the secrets of his methods.
PHOTOS WITH IMPACT this book contains images and Tom describes in detail how readers can achieve the same image.
THE DIGITAL SLR EXPERT LANDSCAPE the first title in a new photography series presents a comprehensive guide to taking fantastic landscape photographs using a digital SLR.
Tom is a photographer who is good in every area his work consists of garden, North America, Europe worldwide architect panoramic and nature.
I like his work because of the simplicity of it he photographs he also just photographs parts of things (one leaf, a window, or just one flower) his use of colour and boldness of an object is present in most of his images.

I have chosen some images that i like and that i feel i could achieve

This picture is interesting the use of colour with the yellow tulip with all the red draws you attention to it. The depth of field is really used well in this image with the tulips being out of focus in the distance.

The rule of the thirds is present in this picture as the puffins eye are on the top line and the feet on the bottom. Even though this picture is not very colourful the red of his beak and feet really stand out. With the image being close you can also feel the textures in this image.

He has framed this picture well with the big stone being in the middle.

The use of Autumn colours is used very well in this image and the tonal range is present hear.

This is a very simple picture and the use of colour and framing is present and he has worked in square format.

This picture is of grape vines this is not possible for me to copy as we have not got them around us but this would be possible to do with corn, rape or even maze field.

The use of colour is amazing in this picture with the flour being so bring, you feel as if you can reach out and touch the flour, the dept of filed is used very well and the focal point being very obvious in this image.

Most of Toms images are done in a square format and i think this frames the image very well.

  1. Hi
Again from what you see that you like in your research, you can identify and add into your own work.Is it the use of colour, shapes, perspective, viewpoint, composition, etc
